EMBL Outstation - The EBI

HINXTON (UK)

Organisation background

The EMBL data library was established in 1980 to collect, organise and distribute nucleotide sequences data. It was the first organisation in the world, and its pioneering work by EMBL on network access to data and CD-ROM makes it a world leader in provision of molecular biology information. EMBL's international role in Europe makes it an ideal organisation to maintain and distribute the IMGT database. IMGT exists at EMBL-EBI as an associated database. As a research institute EMBL and its EMBL-EBI outstation provide the necessary expertise to distribute information, and its status as a publically funded academic organisation means that it is strongly motivated to ensure that data are available in the public domain.
